Which Items Are Playing For Keeps?

The Problem...

“I never meant to make you cry, but tonight I'm cleaning out my closet” comes into my head every time I try to part ways with various pieces of clothing in my closet. I can never decide whether the items are something I actually wear, or just something I think I wear. They say if you don’t wear something within a year, you will never wear it. As a New Englander, in a twelve-month period you will have covered every season and every opportunity to wear the item. However, in the back of my mind I have this feeling that the day after I throw something out (or give it away) I will miss it. Crazy, I know...

It was not until this happened, that I decided enough was enough.

Similar to interviewing for a job, each item of clothing should fill certain requirements in order to earn its stay (or get the job).

Say goodbye if...
  • you love the item on the hanger, but not on your body.
  •  it is a fashion piece that you wore five years ago. It is now terribly out of style and there is no need for it.
  • you don’t love it. You will always choose something else to wear instead.
  • the item does not match with anything else in your closet. Either buy something to match it, or toss it.
  • you are keeping it because it is meaningful to you, but you never actually wear it. Take a picture of it or frame it, but it is only occupying valuable space in your closet.
  • you run out of hangers. Don't you dare buy more hangers... get rid of old clothing!
  • you feel uncomfortable wearing it. Whether this is because of the item's texture, style, or fit, it must GO. You want to look and feel your best in your clothing.
  • you are keeping it only because you splurged on it. You can't feel guilty now... your credit card is already paid off.
  • people are embarrassed by your outfit.
  • you have multiples of something and you only wear a few of the colors. Get rid of the others that are just taking up space!
    • Old Navy flip flops, pashminas, and the 300 college tee-shirts that are just sitting in your drawer

An Easy Solution...

Here is a really easy way to find out whether you “think” you actually wear something versus if you actually do. Turn all of the hangers in your closet the opposite way (so that they are pointing towards you. After washing the items that you have already worn, hang them on the hanger the proper way (facing away from you). This way after a few weeks you will begin to notice which items you are choosing to wear again before you wear the items still facing the opposite way. If you never choose the items on the hangers facing towards you, it is time to part ways. You clearly like many other articles of clothing more than you like those ones. By doing this method, you realize which pieces you never wear, and you can now weed them out of your closet a few at a time... for good.

PolyMORE

I have become addicted, yet again, to Polyvore. I forgot my login information to my old account a while ago, so I was forced to make a new one. For those of you that have not seen the obnoxious amount of sets I have posted recently, or do not know what the site is... be prepared to get hooked! That is, if you are into fashion and upcoming trends.

Polyvore is a social commerce site where you can organize different brands of merchandise to create "Sets" or, in other words "outfits." If you click the TRENDING tab you will see several different options to click under the BROWSE category: What to Wear, Styling Tips, Celebrity, Beauty, Fashion Insider, and In Season. Below that category, there is the TREND category. Today it lists Skull Shirts, Neon Tops, High-Low Dresses, and Metallic Leggings just to name a few. Under that there is the CONTEST category where Polyvore informs its viewers of current contests it is offering.

Just like Twitter and Instagram, Polyvore allows you to follow different accounts and "like" Sets that you admire. It also offers a tab where you can see the top trending Sets.  The cool part about the site is that you can actually shop the different categories and purchase the actual merchandise you are using in your Sets.

When you make your own Set, you are able to share it to a Blog, to Twitter, to Tumblr, to your Email, to Pinterest, and to Facebook. This is a great way to get friends and followers to see your Sets if they are not a member of Polyvore itself.

Here are some of the Sets I have made looking forward to the upcoming months!

Enjoy! xx

Casper Sneaks

This past weekend I went to New York City to visit my sister, and obviously ended up doing way too much shopping. Bloomingdales is a serious black hole for me (especially when the salesman was able to con me into opening a credit card). They not only took my money, but took my heart as well. Seeing--and drooling over-- designer merchandise that I could never afford is like taking a toy from an infant... maybe even worse.

While spending two hours in the shoe department, one particular thing caught my eye.  How was it that every designer now had a version of the sneaker wedge? I swear they were jumping at me like ghosts. Maybe that's why they're called sneakers. Ya know... because they sneak up on you. Although a majority of the designers had recently added the sneaker wedge to their collection, each design was completely different with its own unique twist.

I bought a pair in the beginning of the summer at TJ MAXX, before I realized how trendy they were becoming. Then a month later, I bought another... I thought I was done after that.   It was not long before I realized that Bloomingdales was a sneaker-wedge Heaven... or I guess in this case, Hell.

Here are some that I have seen over the past couple months and think are totally rad...
